Fixing Double Pane Windows

As more homeowners in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey begin turning toward energy efficient appliances and parts, it’s important to learn about fixing double pane windows – especially since they have a tendency to get discolored and foggy after use. As with any window installation it is best to have a trusted contractor like Prime Home Improvements do the work rather than trying to tackle the project yourself. There are many things that can go wrong and it is always more expensive to fix a problem after the fact than doing it correctly the first time around! However, if you do try to attempt fixing your double pane windows yourself, here are the most important steps that you need to follow:

1. Separate the two panes of glass.

2. Locate the butyl sealant on the edge of the window and remove it. This is the black, rubber-like substance.

3. Clean any discoloration and remove the debris.

4. Clean glass panes with isopropyl alcohol, water and white vinegar. This is the most important part of fixing double pane windows - the silicone won't adhere to dirty glass.

5. Replace top pane on spacer.

6. Run a bead of silicone around the perimeter of the spacer. Make sure there are no gaps between the spacer and the glass.

7. Run another thick bead of silicone around the perimeter of the whole unit, covering the spacer.

8. Allow the silicone to cure for at least 24 hours. After the silicone cures, you can then place the window back into the frame. Follow all instructions on the bottle of silicone regarding cure time.

Fixing double pane windows around your house is definitely worth the effort – they’re much sturdier than single pane windows, and they offer a better means of insulation. However, you may end up having to replace the foggy, discolored panes if anything breaks while you are trying to clean them. You can avoid most accidents by working in a clean, dedicated work environment.
