Installing Basement Windows

Windows are important for any building. They allow sunshine in, provide fresh air, and even save lives in the event of a fire or emergency. Installing basement windows properly is essential to making sure that they work correctly all of the time. Before starting the project measure the opening and have the correct sized window ready to install before removing the old window.

How to Install Basement Windows:

1. The first thing to do in installing basement windows is to remove the old window. This is done by removing the trim first and then scraping any caulk away that may be holding the window in places. Once the trim is removed use a sawzall to cut any nails that was used to hold the frame in place.

2. Next take the new window and place it into the hole. Use a level to make sure the window sits plumb in the hole. It is important that the window is level left to right and up and down so the window operates correctly. Once the window is plumb use the provided screws to secure the window into place.

3. The next step in installing basement windows is to caulk and insulate any space between the house and the frame of the window. You can either use fiberglass insulation or a spray insulation to finish this step. One thing to remember is to keep the insulation from extruding out the opening so the trim can go back on without trouble.

4. Once insulated, replace the trim. The trim should go back on without any trouble.

Most windows will require work from the inside and outside. It is always best to pick a day that is not to cold or not to hot. Should the furnace or Air conditioner be overworked it can cause a breakdown and excess cost to repair.
