Replacing Double Pane Glass
Replacing double pane glass in a window that gets broken takes a bit of time but with patience and a lot of skill you can replace your double pane glass yourself. Make sure to wear eye protection and gloves.
Double pane glass is composed of two pieces of glass sandwiched together around air or an inert gas. Because the glass is manufactured with an air seal you will have to purchase entirely new double pane glass even if only one pane or the seal is broken. Here are the steps to
replacing double pane glass:
1. Look closely at how the
frame is constructed. Double pane windows are often held together with screws. If possible remove the window entirely. Remove the screws that hold the frame together. If there are any spacers put those aside with the screws. Cut the silicone seals and carefully remove the glass. If the window is a stationary slider you will need help from a friend. Replacing double pane glass can be awkward because of the weight of the glass. First cut any rubber exterior insulation and remove it. Have your friend hold the window from the outside. Go inside and cut the silicone seal that remains on the inside of the window and carefully remove the old glass.
2. Buy replacement double pane glass
exactly the same size and thickness.
3.
Clean out the frame completely.
4. Pipe a bead of
new clear silicone into the frame and carefully fit the new glass into the window. Replace the screws and spacers (if any) and reattach the window. If the window is a slider add new rubber insulation around the outside of the window.
5. Once the first layer of silicone has dried
apply another thin bead of silicone around the window to keep moisture out.
