Type Of Siding

Installing new siding on a home can dramatically improve both its look and its value. The first type of siding to be discussed here is wood, which is often seen on pre-war and older homes that have been restored. One can often see an older home that could have been beautiful with modern aluminum siding on it. Fortunately, in designated historic districts, authentic materials, such as a wooden type of siding are government mandated. One should be aware that wood siding requires upkeep, in the form of regular paint, stain and caulking. The first type of siding in this category is called clapboard or beveled, which is installed horizontally.

The second type of siding is called board or plank, and it is installed vertically. A subtype of board siding is made of plywood treated to look like board and batten wood. Wood siding can be found in numerous finishes, varieties and surface characteristics. It is not difficult to repair. On the negative side, it requires more upkeep than other types of siding, and is subject to degrading in the form of insects, warping, rot and splitting. Further, wood siding is not easy to install without tearing off existing siding.

Another type of siding is durable aluminum siding which was created to avoid the labor of maintaining wood siding. It is manufactured in strips with pre-drilled holes for easy installation. To protect against weather, it has locking margins that overlap, and can be installed vertically or horizontally. It can be altered texturally, but does not accommodate trim work. Sadly, some historic homes have been covered with aluminum siding when their owners lacked the funds for complete restoration efforts. Another disadvantage of aluminum siding is that is dents easily. One should avoid pre-colored siding, and instead purchase a vinyl coated finish, which carries a 35-year warranty.
