Whether doing an outdoor remodel or building a home, the two most popular sidings to put on houses is vinyl siding and wood siding. There are some advantages to each and some disadvantages to each. How do you determine which is the best kind of siding?
Vinyl Siding:
Vinyl siding is popular because it is relatively inexpensive. Vinyl siding tends to be low maintenance since it does not require painting and is unlikely to crack or show other weathering. At most, a periodic washing is all that is needed to keep vinyl siding looking good until it wears out after 20 to 30 years, depending on the quality of siding purchased. Vinyl siding also comes in many different colors so the homeowner can have options when choosing the right siding for their home.
A negative to vinyl siding is that it difficult replace damaged pieces without the repair being obvious. This is due to the vinyl fading from sun and elements. It is also possible for vinyl siding to trap moisture between the siding and the wall which can damage the wall and possibly creating mold that will affect the air quality of the home.
Wooden Siding:Wood siding has what many people consider a more aesthetically pleasing look. Wood siding also acts as an insulator making it both good looking and a way to lower your utility bill. If wood siding becomes damaged it is usually fairly easy to replace or fix, then when painted, it will match the existing siding so repairs are no easily detected.
One of the disadvantages to wood siding is that it often costs more to install, and the upkeep of wood siding is more expensive. This siding has to be painted every five to 10 years, not just to keep the home looking good, but also to protect the wood so it will last longer. Wood siding can also be susceptible to termites or other pests that vinyl siding isn’t susceptible to.
Deciding factors for choosing siding: For most homeowners the two biggest deciding factors in choosing which kind of siding is cost and upkeep. For many homeowners wood siding might cost too much, especially when periodic painting is taken into consideration. For others, it isn’t the cost but the upkeep that is the deciding factor. Needing to paint a house every 10 years or so is simply more than some homeowners want to take on. Choosing the right kind of siding is a huge decision and one that you will have to live with for a long time, so take your time.
